“For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7),” is a Bible verse that Bethany Hamilton keeps close to her heart.
In 2003, Hamilton was enjoying a routine surf session when she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark. The tiger shark bit off her left arm and it is truly a miracle that she survived. It was thought that such an injury would end her budding surfing career, but the fearless 13-year old returned to the water just one month after the attack.
She credits her strong faith in Jesus Christ as her support in overcoming adversity and keeping a positive attitude. In 2007, she won her first national title as a professional surfer. Her story was shared with millions in the 2011, film Soul Surfer. Today Hamilton’s non-profit organization Friends of Bethany provides support and encourage to victims of shark attacks and traumatic amputees.
No matter what happens, it is important to move forward. Bethany Hamilton is an excellent role model for striving to be the best you can be regardless of what happens!
