Did you know that keeping Houston beautiful and thriving is as simple as getting in touch with nature? It’s true! Whether you’re an avid gardener, a nature enthusiast or you just want to get outdoors for a few hours, consider volunteering at Mercer Botanic Gardens. This 325-acre garden is open year-round so that visitors can enjoy nature at its finest. The gardens include a vast collection of native and cultivated plants. Operated by Harris County, Mercer Botanic Gardens also boasts a “living museum” in which animal life thrives.
Who Can Volunteer
This is a great volunteer opportunity for anyone 16 years of age and older — even if you haven’t ever gardened before. That’s because as you assist with the maintenance of the gardens, you’ll be educated on what the best methods are. That includes learning how to plant, prune and provide overall maintenance. The learning doesn’t end there, though. You’ll also learn about native plants and discover which plants are best for gardens across Houston.
