When Life Gives You Lemons, Raise Money for Cancer!

$150,000 has been raised for a cancer foundation, thanks to a 10-year boy’s determination to help others. Mario Carpino has inoperable brain tumors himself, but his persistence in campaigning for other families who are affected by cancer is truly remarkable.

It was discovered that Mario had inoperable brain tumors in December 2007 at the age of 4 years old. With the help of chemotherapy, his tumors shrunk, but returned in the following years. He gets a CT scan to make sure that his tumors are still stable every 3 months to be prepared for more treatment, however, he isn’t slowing down.

As a wonderful way to keep his spirits up, Mario works with Alex’s Lemonade Stand for childhood cancer, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and support for grants that go directly to pediatric cancer research.

Every year that Mario has set a fundraising goal for his annual lemonade stand, he has more than exceeded it.  When he held his first stand in 2011, he set a goal of $5,000 and ended up with a total of $25,134. In 2012, Mario’s goal was $25,000 but, he raised $48,517. And then in 2013, he raised $68,542 after setting a goal of $50,000. You can also get involved and make donations through his event page.

Currently a 4th grade student, Mario has set his sights on getting his favorite singer, Bon Jovi, to come to his annual lemonade stand in June. With a goal of $60,000, Mario ready to continue raising funds for cancer research.

It’s always important to be the change you want to see in the world every day. Mario is an inspiration to all of us, demonstrating how one person can have an impact on the lives of so many.
