Waiting to reach a certain age to chase a dream is common for many people, but 13-year-old Laura Dekker was not one of them.
Born on a boat and raised on the sea in New Zealand, Dekker had a deep connection with the ocean from the start. The Dutch teen made headlines when she announced her plan to sail around the world by herself in 2009. After battling the Dutch court who had blocked her from sailing, her adventurous voyage took place in 2010 at the age of 14. For two years she sailed around the globe alone with her camera, racking up 27,000 miles, making her the youngest person to sail around the world solo.
Although many people remember Dekker for the controversy surrounding her age, it was truly remarkable that she used her unique set of life skills and determination to fuel her passion for so long at sea.
