Prom Closet, a wonderful Houston program that provides teens with prom dresses free of charge, just finished its 10th annual prom season! Elise Sheppard, a reference librarian at Lone Star College Cy-Fair and head of the program, was proud to provide 400 dresses this year to girls in the area that otherwise couldn’t afford a gown for a prom, wedding, or recital.
Sheppard filled the Houston Chronicle in with details about her incredible program. The community provides the dresses, and Sheppard encourages others to donate their gently worn and stylish dresses, shawls, purses and heels all year round so that each girl can find the perfect outfit. The dress collection is in a large closet kept on hangers in the LSC Library and gowns can be donated at the LSC Cy-Fair library, or any Harris County Public Library. In the past ten years the program has provided anywhere from 400 to 1,000 dresses each year to girls in need, so donations are the lifeblood of the program.
Do you have a few dresses or other accessories in your closet you could give? Send Sheppard a message at elise.j.sheppard@lonestart.edu. It’s a simple deed that would bring so much joy to a fellow Houston woman.
