If you are looking to volunteer at a place that takes concern for the physical, mental, and emotional wellness of the others, we’ve got the perfect place for you. Established in 2007, The Beacon is a non-profit organization in downtown Houston that provides services to assist Houston’s poor and homeless. It features 4 programs that work together to give those in need hope, resources and a better future:
The Beacon Day Center – Designed to help with daily life, the center provides meals, showers, bathrooms, and case management.
Cathedral Clinic at The Beacon – Medical care is often hard to come by, so those in need can get primary health care, mental health counseling and psychiatric treatment.
Brigid’s Hope at The Beacon – As the counseling branch, Brigid’s Hope provides transitional housing and supportive services to reduce the number of women returning to the criminal justice system for petty crimes.
Cathedral Justice Project at The Beacon – For those in need of legal assistance free of charge, this is a great place to turn to.
Volunteers are always needed to keep these operations running smoothly. Lend a hand with client reception, laundry service, meal service, or be mentor to those in the transitional residence program. The Cathedral Justice Project also needs paralegals, attorneys, and law students who would like to donate their time and services.
To get started with the Beacon, register on their volunteer page and let them know where you may be most helpful. Have you volunteered at The Beacon lately; how was your experience?
