We love seeing children get involved with helping other early, creating a new generation of people to better society. Recently, Jetta Fosburg, a 10-year-old girl, donated 14 inches of her hair to Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization that donates wigs made from donated hair to help young cancer patients who have lost their hair from treatment.
“I have some family members who have cancer so I thought it was the right thing to do,” the brave Ohio native shared in an interview with Fox News regarding her personal decision to change her appearance and donate. Unfortunately, kids can sometimes be extremely cruel and Jetta experienced a harsh backlash to her compassionate act.
According to The Daily Mail, she returned to school and was relentlessly bullied by kids for her new look. They called her ugly, said she looked like a boy, and many more hurtful insults
Jetta’s mother went to the principal and asked him to do something about the bullying, but, his only response was ‘he didn’t know of any child that had ever died from words.’ Even with a disappointing lack of help from her school, and eventually having to leave school entirely, Jetta didn’t give up, making her one of the bravest 10-year-old’s we know!
To keep Jetta’s optimistic and lift her spirits, Jetta’s mother created the hashtag #standwithjetta and an anti-bullying Facebook page for her daughter, which has garnered more than 107,000 likes in the past few weeks. Women from all over are posting pictures of themselves with their beautiful short hair cuts, with some even cutting their hair or shaving their heads in solidarity with Jetta. Recently, supporters even showed up to Jetta’s former school to protest the terrible bullying that occurred.
We’re so proud of Jetta for persevering and showing her bullies that words hurt, while sticking to her decision to help other children. She made an important, selfless donation for children her age so they wouldn’t have to face the bullying she has suffered, as they battle the scariest threat of all, childhood cancer. You can join Jetta by donating your natural, undyed hair to Wigs for Kids and Pantene Beautiful Lengths, or be brave and go bald for a St. Baldrick’s event around St. Patrick’s Day.
